cambridge 15권 test 2-task 1 강의에서 궁금한 것이 있습니다.
선생님께서 올려주신 sample essay에서는 more people stayed on the island rather than staying on cruise ships. 라고 하셨는데, rather than을 사용할때는 동일한 문법적 형태가 온다고 알고 있는데 stayed 와 staying은 같이 써도 되는건가요?

rather than 의 용법에는 2가지가 있습니다.
1. 전치사 (preposition) 역할 => instead of 의 뜻으로서 뒤에 동명사가 옵니다.
More people stayed on the island rather than staying on cruise ships.
More people stayed on the island rather than on cruise ships. (생략가능)
Rather than staying on cruise ships, .more people stayed on the island.
2. 접속사 역할 (병렬구조, 시제 일치)
More people decided to stay on the island rather than stay on cruise ships.
I walk to school rather than ride a bike.
우리의 예제에서
More people stayed on the island rather than stay on cruise ships. (시제 불일치라 틀립니다.)
More people stayed on the island rather than stayed on cruise ships. (rather than 뒤에는 명사, 동명사, 동사원형 (to 부정사에서 to 생략) 만 옵니다.
따라서, More people stayed on the island rather than (staying) on cruise ships. 라고 (staying 생략 가능) 라고 쓰며, rather than 이 전치사 역할을 했다고 보면 됩니다.
