In many countries, people do not recycle waste materials, such as bottles and newspapers. What are the reasons for this? What could be done to solve this problem?

많은 국가에서 사람들이 병이나 신문지와 같은 쓰레기를 재활용하지 않습니다. 이러한 현상이 발생하는 이유는 무엇일까요? 이를 해결하기 위해 어떤 조치를 취할 수 있을까요?

Reasons for low recycling rates - people may lack convenient facilities or sufficient motivation.

1. Recycling bins are not always readily available in public places, making it difficult for people to separate their waste outside the home. For example, shoppers may dispose of empty bottles with general rubbish if there are no suitable collection points nearby.

2. Environmental concerns alone may not provide sufficient motivation for everyone to recycle. For example, some individuals may recognise the benefits of recycling but feel that sorting their household waste requires too much effort, especially when they receive no direct benefit in return.

Solutions to increase participation - recycling should be more convenient and rewarding.

1. Local governments should improve access to recycling facilities in busy public areas, such as shopping streets and parks. For example, placing clearly labelled recycling bins next to general waste bins would allow people to dispose of recyclable items separately, even when they are away from home.

2. Financial incentives could encourage more people to recycle. For example, under a government-supported scheme, customers could pay a small deposit when purchasing a bottled drink and receive a refund when they return the empty container to a machine at a supermarket. This approach could motivate even those who are less concerned about the environment to take part.
