Some cities have vehicle-free days, when private cars and other vehicles are banned from the city centre and people have to use public transport, walk or cycle. Do the advantages of this outweigh the disadvantages?
Advantages to vehicle-free days
1. This policy can help to reduce exhaust fumes and improve air quality in densely populated city centres.
2. The fewer people use their private cars, the less traffic congestion there will be, although this policy is only implemented on certain days.
3. People are encouraged to walk or cycle, which can increase their level of physical activity. Therefore, this policy can also promote healthier lifestyles.
Disadvantages to this policy
1. Public transport systems may become overcrowded, particularly during peak hours, which may in turn cause inconvenience to passengers.
2. People who rely heavily on private cars may find it difficult to travel. For example, as access to public transport is not always easy for the elderly and people with disabilities, forcing every citizen to take public transport may be unfair.
3. The environmental benefits may be limited because vehicle-free days are only held occasionally.
